Coventry did not have any system of policing until the municipal corporations act of 1835 gave the city fathers powers to create a recognised police force.
Twenty constables were enrolled under the supervision of a sergeant and inspector. The chief constable, Mr Thomas Henry Prosser was an ex-Bow Street Runner.
The force strength in 1910 was 100 officers and 137 officers in 1914.
