Yesteryear Collection

Coventry did not have any system of policing until the municipal corporations act of 1835 gave the city fathers powers to create a recognised police force. Twenty constables were enrolled under the supervision of a sergeant and inspector. The chief constable, Mr Thomas Henry Prosser was an ex-Bow Street Runner. The force strength in 1910 was 100 officers and 137 officers in 1914.
In 1969 the force amalgamated with its neighbour Warwickshire constabulary to form the Warwickshire and Coventry Constabulary and in 1974, following local government re-organisation, became a division within the West Midlands Police.
